Step 1: Prep your PS3

First, we'll need to make sure you've got your PS3 set up correctly and running.

Update your PS3's software

Make sure your PS3 is running the latest version of the PS3 software.

Enable ATRAC

On your PS3, go to [ Settings ] > [ System Settings ] > Enable ATRAC if you haven't already. Apparently ATRAC is a set of audio compression algorithms (see article on ATRAC). You might be required to enable this so that the PSP can receive sound from the PS3 when connected. (NOTE: The instructions to enable ATRAC is on one of the error messages the PS3 gives when troubleshooting how to connect the PSP and PS3 together.)

Enable Internet Connection

Make sure your PS3's internet connection is enabled. Its status is listed under [ Settings ] > [ Network Settings ] > Internet Connection.

Step 2: Set up your PS3's access point

Now, let's set up your PS3 as an access point for your PSP to connect to:

  • On your PS3, go to [ settings ] > [ Network Settings ] > Remote Play Connection Settings. Hit the right arrow to go through the first screen of (quite vague) instructions.
  • You'll be prompted for an SSID. This is the SSID you'll be assigning your PS3. I just gave mine the SSID of 'PS3'. Pick whatever you like, but remember what you choose here. Then, hit the right arrow button to continue.
  • Now you'll need to select a security setting, except you don't have a choice. It's gotta be WPA-PSK (AES). So go with that by hitting the right arrow button and continuing onto the next screen.
  • Okay, now you have to create a WPA key. Basically this is a password any device trying to connect to your PS3 will need to know to successfully connect. It's got to be at least 8 characters long. You can pick anything you want. For example, you could put 'examplepass' as your WPA key. Ok, so pick one, remember it, and hit right arrow to continue...
  • Press the 'X' button on your controller to save these settings.
  • On your PS3, browse to [ Network ] > Remote Play. This will turn on your PS3's access point.

Step 3: Prep your PSP

Make sure your PSP is running the latest version of the PSP firmware (if you're into homebrew, there may be a version available that will enable Remote Play.) Now it's time to configure your PSP to connect:

  • Let's add your PS3's access point to your PSP. On your PSP, go to [ Settings ] > [ Network Settings ] > Infrastructure Mode > [ New Connection ]. (NOTE: If '[New Connection]' is greyed out on your PSP, you probably have too many access points in your list. Delete one and you should be able to create a new one again.)
  • After clicking '[New Connection]' you should be prompted to select 'Scan', 'Enter Manually', or 'Automatic' to configure your 'WLAN Settings'. Select 'Scan'.
  • Your PSP should now be able to see your PS3. Remember how I named mine 'PS3'? Well, this is how it appears in the scan list on my PSP:
 SSID: PS3, Security: WPA-PSK (AES)
  • On the connection screen, pick your PS3 - you should know which access point it is based on the name you picked in step 2 above. (NOTE: If you can't see your PS3 in this list, try entering it manually. If not - well, I'm not sure what could be wrong. Go through the steps above again, or post the error messages you're getting here and we'll see if we can figure it out.)
  • Click right arrow to proceed to the 'WPA Key' screen. This is where you need to enter the WPA key you created in step 2 above. I used 'examplepass' so that's what I'll type in here.
  • Click right arrow to continue - you'll be asked if you want to use 'Easy' or 'Custom' address settings. 'Easy' should work fine.
  • Again, click right arrow through to the end to finish up.

Step 4: Connect PSP to PS3

Finally, let's connect your PSP to your PS3!

  • Make sure your PS3 is on the [ Network ] > Remote Play screen. It'll say "Connect the PSP(TM) system using a remote play connection."
  • On your PSP, go to [ Network ] > Remote Play. It'll give you a little explanation screen, click ok to get past it.
  • You'll be prompted to select a network connection. Select the one we set up in part 3 above - I named mine 'PS3' so I'll pick that here now.
  • Woohoo, you should be connected! Now you can see and control your PS3 on your PSP's screen!

Appendix: Tweaking the Remote Play Settings

When your PSP is connected to your PS3, the 'Home' button on the PSP will give you options on tweaking the connection as well as the option to quit. Here's what the menu looks like:

  • Quit Remote Play
  • PS Button - The PSP equivalent of the PS3 controller's 'PS' button.
  • Settings
    • Response Time - This appears to increase/decrease the image quality (consequently increasing/decreasing lag/response time as well)
    • Connection Status - Info screen that gives you the name of the PS3 connection, signal strength, PS3 SSID, and channel of the connection.

Troubleshooting

I just don't get it. It doesn't work.

Make sure you are following the steps in order. You need to *completely* set up the access point on the PS3 first before you even start with the PSP. You can't do one step on the PS3, then on the PSP, then the next step on the PS3 and the PSP. It doesn't work like that. See, if you try to connect the PSP to the PS3 before the PS3's access point is completely set up, the access point won't be turned on yet for the PSP to connect to.

This isn't working for me. Do I have to tweak my wireless router / cable modem / DSL modem / etc.?

The connection between the PS3 and PSP has nothing to do with your wireless router. It is a connection strictly between your PS3 and your PSP. Your wireless router should not be part of that connection at all, so twiddling the settings on your wireless router shouldn't really affect this connection. Basically, for this connection, your PS3 is acting like a wireless router for your PSP. This is why it doesn't have anything to do with your wireless router.

I already set up Remote Play - How come I can't connect anymore?

Make sure you are on the [ Network ] > Remote Play screen on the PS3 before you try to connect the PSP to the PS3. This screen turns the PS3's access point on. If you try to connect the PSP to the PS3 when the PS3 is not on this screen, the PSP won't be able to find the PS3.

You do not have to set up the PS3's access point (pick an ssid, pick a password, etc.) *every* time you want to connect the two. That is only a one-time process. After you've set those up initially, you only have to go to Network > Remote Play to turn the access point on.

When I try to go to remote play connection settings the icon won't be there.

A number of people have reported this behaviour on the official Play Station forums when using an HDMI cable. Try again using the composite cable. You may want to file a ticket with customer services.
